I'M OUT AND PROUD AND HAPPY TO FLY THE FLAG!

AUSTRALIA DAY

Oh yeah, I’m out and proud and happy to fly the flag!

So, imagine my surprise when a huge controversy arose out about proud Australian’s flying their nation’s flags – on their cars of all things!!

Honestly, there is seriously no pleasing some people and I openly admit I am well and truly over so called well-meaning do-gooders forcing their gross generalisations on the rest of us.

To label anyone who dared admit they are proudly Australian as a redneck racist out to insight our country’s mosh pit of immigrants is just all too much for me.

In preparation for this month’s article I took special note of the cars I saw toting the Australian flag leading up to Australia Day – well, just like our great country boasts a delicious cross section of the world community, cars displaying the flag also represented a diverse cross section of car makers.

I saw flags on Toyota’s, Holden’s, Mercedes’, Ford’s, BMW’s, Nissan’s, 4WDs, Sedans and Utes alike and an old Datsun that I’m even sure pre-dated me – funnily enough not one of those cars displayed a gun-rack or a KKK sticker on the back windshield – what’s with that?

 PATRIOTISM

What this country needs is a more united front – aren’t we all working towards a better nation for not just us but our kids and their kids and I see nothing wrong with encouraging a bit of patriotism.

Pride is a great motivator – if we instilled more pride into our children I feel sure society would be much better off on a number of levels.

Our flag is representative of all that is good about our nation – I don’t understand how anyone can or wants to read anything more into it.

And yes, I was one of the “bogans” you saw driving around at Christmas time with my Reindeer antlers and Rudolph red nose proudly displayed on my Mercedes 4WD – why, because along with my 11yo daughter, we love Christmas and wanted to!

Did we hurt anyone, did we offend anyone, was it anyone else’s business what we put on our car – I think not – just like the Aussie flag.

The Australian flag represents our ability to choose what we do and how we do or don’t do it, within the guidelines of the Australian law. So to those who have a problem with it – I say, “get out more and get a life!”

And don’t even get me started on the protestors who actively intimidated and disrupted Australia Day Celebrations in Canberra with the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader in attendance … let’s just say in my opinion it was very Un-Australian behaviour!
